Fan Girl Fashion Face-Off: Sherlock vs. Sherlock

Image

Let me clear this up: I love both BBC’s Sherlock and CBS’ Elementary equally, for different reasons; one reason happens to be the costumes.  The wardrobe that one Sherlock wears from another says a lot about the kind of Sherlock he is.  For example, Jonny Lee Miler’s Sherlock is more modern, sleek, and “cool”, while Benedict Cumberbatch’s Sherlock is not as tailored and fashion forward (which is totally fine, because not only are the Sherlock’s different, the stories they are telling and the moods suit the costume choices). Also, because of the actor’s themselves, Jonny’s Sherlock is more edgy despite his well-put together outfits.  I love BBC Sherlock’s famous trench coat and scarf, and I love CBS’ Sherlock because of he looks like the frontman for a cool band, plus his scarves and coats.  So, pushing all feuds aside over which Sherlock is better (dude, relax, they’re both great! So is RDJ’s Sherlock!), let’s take a look at their fashion face-off!

I love the layering costume designer Rebecca Hofherr does for Sherlock. It’s youthful, a bit messy, but for the most part each piece is tailored and stylish.

One of my favorites combining rich colors with a great coat.

Sherlock in vests? Yes, please. Hofherr said in an interview it was Miller’s idea to have Sherlock’s shirts button-up all the way. Makes him stand out from the average guy and it does give him this studious, crazy vibe.

Image

CBS’ Sherlock is actually quite fearless in what he wears. Not many men would be willing to wear this tangerine/apricot color and mix it with dark outerwear. He always mixes casual and formal wear.

Image

First off, how cute is he here? Secondly, that light blue button down is definitely my-kind-of-boyfriend-material, and the gray suit jacket dresses it up nicely.

Image

I personally, am a big fan of guys layering and wearing button downs. I like that CBS’ Sherlock appears to care about his looks, not because he is vain, purse, but because he’s a man who knows exactly who he is and isn’t afraid to express it.

Now onto BBC’s Sherlock starring Benedict Cumberbatch as the beloved sociopath.

Sarah Arthur is the costume designer and gears toward darker, richer colors for Sherlock, and of course… that coat.

Image

Starting off with a gem: Sherlock’s robe and PJ’s. The guy loves blue, that’s for sure, and being comfortable.

Image

Bright blue Paul Smith scarf and navy/gray coat. I love when he pops his collar a bit, and the red stitching for the buttons are a nice detail.

Image

Classic Sherlock image with the coat, scarf, black jacket, and white shirt layered together. I do like this wardrobe choice because it has become iconic to the character, and he never strays too far from it.

Image

Sherlock looking ultra sleek. I like when Sherlock ditches the coat. Notice BBC Sherlock doesn’t button his shirts all the way up… perhaps it’s a bit constraining?

Image

Ah, the famous purple shirt. Sarah Arthur has said that this shirt is the most expensive in Sherlock’s wardrobe. It’s a nice color with his dark outwear and makes him stand out. I guess it could be a color that a guy who is a bit “off” would pick.

What I love about Sherlock’s scarves is how practical they are, and how easy it is to put them on… or take off. Who would’ve thought a scarf could be so sexy?

For me, CBS Sherlock is more interesting to look at because of his fashion choices; on the downside, I’m so into what he is wearing I don’t necessarily focus on the character as much (but that’s my problem, not anyone else’s). I appreciate how BBC Sherlock stays true to a certain color palette and fit.  CBS Sherlock does the same thing with more tailored clothes and a mixture of patterns and colors, but just in a more playful way.  I like how BBC Sherlock’s color choices reflect his darker side and makes him a bit intimidating.  He’s like a giant shadow who you don’t see but sees you completely.

Conclusion:  In terms of FASHION, WARDROBE, COSTUME, whatever you may call it, CBS SHERLOCK is the winner.  Why? Because they are really completely re imagining what a modern Sherlock would wear.  For me, Sherlock is a bit off, but something about him is effortlessly cool.  BBC’s Sherlock is cool too, but I wouldn’t mind dating CBS Sherlock simply for his closet.
